The Ultimate Relationship

Obviously, since I have been divorced twice, relationships have been the biggest disappointment in my life. Relationships have also been the greatest joy. I have terrific kids that I love alot and get along with very well. I have one brother that I am very close too and many great friends that I see and talk to often. My marriages were a source of happiness but also betrayal and sorrow. I also lost both parents while still in my 20's, so I know alot about loss.

All of the above experience has led me to understand more deeply the nature of my relationship with God. I have found that when people have left me, God has been with me. When people have betrayed me, God has been faithful. When relationships have disappointed me God encourages me. When I am fearful for those I love God gives me strength and peace. My relationship with God gives me the greatest joy of all. But all of these blessings are not sent like a bolt from the blue. My relationship with God is just like any other in that I must be engaged in it. I must communicate with God to strengthen our relationship and reap the benefits.

So how do I communicate with the Creator of the universe? I don't have a phone, e-mail or instant message connection to God, no matter what the movies portray. God communicates with me through his Holy Spirit. As I draw closer to God in studying his word, meditating on his word and through prayer His spirit communicates with my spirit. If you feel out of touch with God turn to his word. Just as in human relationships, we can not have deep communication with strangers, we have to get to know them first. The Bible is the way to know God. Prayer and meditation is the way to communicate with God.

A relationship with God is the ultimate relationship because "...he will never leave me nor forsake me." Deuteronomy 31:6, he desires to have a relationship with me "...He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us" James 4:5 , and he "..causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

For me the psalmist explains it best: "
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit." Psalms 34:18
